Ever have those times when you know you’re overthinking something? It happens to me all the time and there are two things that gets me out of it every time.
Get it out of your head and talk to someone else
Sometimes that person is my husband.
Sometimes that person is a friend.
Sometimes that person is a biz bestie (or a few of them).
Sometimes that person is a coach.
And the majority of the time all it really takes is me talking it out to realize what I need to do or what’s stopping me from doing it. When the words are said out loud, all the sudden it’s more clear.
But this isn’t just something that happens to me so instead of sharing only my stories I wanted to share a few of my clients stories, with their permission of course.
Overthinking A Business Pivot
My client, Cari who had an incredible aha moment on one of our coaching sessions. She was feeling the urge to make a change in her business but was overthinking it a lot. But through simply sharing her desires on this call, we identified her next business move together. With her permission, I’m going to play a clip from her coaching session so that you can hear her emotional response to this aha moment. I get goosebumps every time I think of this moment with her!
Overthinking A Content Decision
Another client of mine, Amy, was struggling to decide what content channel to focus on. Before I share this audio clip it’s important to know that I’ve been working with Amy for over a year and I know what type of coaching she needs and responds to. Also, we had been talking about content for a while so this clips context is that it wasn’t the first conversation about this. I say this because I’m a bit punchy in this one.
Overthinking A Revenue Transition
Another client of mine was struggling with making a revenue shift in her business. While she’s making money in her business, she wanted to shift to a new offering and was overthinking all the details of that transition.
Jenna, said this:
“I thought I should know what to do but when I’m caught up in the details, it’s hard to see clearly. I appreciate you taking the time to sort through it with me without making me feel silly and helping me create a simple, realistic plan to hit my goals.” – Jenna
We worked on that realistic plan but when you work with me, my brain doesn’t stop thinking about your business when we leave the zoom room. I often have more ideas that I share later and that’s what happened with Jenna. With her permission, here’s the idea I shared with her after a coaching session that outlined how she could effectively transition $1,400 in revenue every month to her new offering.
Sometimes you just need an outside perspective to help you see through the nitty-gritty details of the day to day stuff. This doesn’t mean you’re not equipped enough to do it alone. It doesn’t mean you’re failing. It simply means you’re too close to the details and you need an outside perspective to help push you through the hard part.
Know what level of accountability you need and find it
Once you’ve shared with someone else, it’s time to take action but that’s easier said than done. This is where self-awareness is key. If you know you need regular check-ins from someone to ensure you stay focused and follow through, find it!
I ask all my clients why now when it comes to working with a coach in a long-term way. One of my clients, Amy, said this:
“I need a check in person to get it going and to keep it going.” – Amy
She knew what she needed and was ready to jump in when we started. This is the key – know what you need, find it and utilize that support to it’s fullest.
